Chris Ware

Date(s):  February 16, 2007 thru April 29, 2007

Chris Ware, sometimes described as an “alternative cartoonist” because his works are not quite comic books and not the normal graphic novels, opened a new exhibition, Chris Ware, with a talk and reception on February 16 at Sheldon. More than 350 attended, overflowing the auditorium.

As part of Sheldon’s “Forming American Identities” initiative, this exhibition features drawings, sketches, models, and selected ephemera related to Ware’s new graphic novel now underway. The novel takes place in Omaha, where Ware was born and grew up. The installation offers insights into the creative process of one of the more celebrated comic artists of his generation.

Ware delivers his multi-layered stories, evoking an unsettled view of modern life, with intricate drawings and precise, spare text and dialogue. After attending the University of Texas in the mid-1980s, he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1990. His published works include Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (2000) and Quimby the Mouse (2002). Ware’s works have been selected for numerous exhibitions including the Whitney Biennial, and were also part of the Sheldon’s Comics, Heroes and American Visual Culture in 2002.

Chris Ware will be on view through April 29, 2007. Coinciding with this exhibition, Comic Art will be shown through April 29 and will feature a gallery guide with an essay written by Ware.
