Dorothea LangeIn 1935 Dorothea Lange began working for the New Deal’s Resettlement Administration, later renamed the Farm Security Administration (FSA). The FSA employed photographers to document the effects of the Great Depression on rural America. The organization allowed Lange to travel the nation and photograph displaced families, migrant workers, and the rural poor. Created in June 1935, Filipinos Cutting Lettuce is one of Lange’s many images of itinerant field laborers. Her composition not only highlights the rhythmic pattern of the stooped laborers, but also emphasizes the vast agricultural landscape that was their source of survival.
