Luigi LucioniAlthough Luigi Lucioni became best known for his landscapes, in the late 1920s his subjects were largely still lifes and portraits, particularly those of his circle of gay artists and friends. His still lifes had a distinct resonance for Depression-era audiences, as they could convey the tension between the nation’s rapid industrialization and its agrarian past. This is captured here by the combination of machine-made objects with the wooden table and homespun tablecloth; moreover, Lucioni’s crisp, meticulous style evokes a precision and rationality associated with the machine age.
